Jasper

She’d started panicking when she thought I wasn’t going to let Jill know what was wrong. This let me know a couple of things. First, it let me know that she had a strong family connection. She knew just how important it was to tell your family what you were doing and where you were going. Secondly, it let me know that someone hadn’t fulfilled their side of the bargain in that sense, and she was still reeling from it.

I didn’t know her family situation. I knew she at least had a mom, but the two of us had still been figuring each other out when everything had started to go south for us.

There was more to her, I was sure. Maybe she’d lost someone special. Maybe they hadn’t let her know what was going on or where they were. Had poor, sweet Brianna lost someone and blamed herself for it? Maybe she’d even tried to get over it by throwing herself into work. That would explain part of why she was such a great guardian.

When you had nothing left to lose, you tended to give your job your all.

Now, as I held her, I didn’t ask if she was okay. I already knew that she wasn’t. I didn’t ask if she wanted to talk about it. She didn’t. What I did do was just hold her for a few minutes until her breathing regulated. She stopped shaking, and then I released her. She took a step back and looked up at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“No,” I shook my head. “Do not apologize for that, Brianna.”

She was stunned by this: too stunned to speak. Apparently, nobody had ever really been kind to her before. At least, that was the impression I’d gotten from her.

“You never need to apologize for needing time,” I lowered my voice. Arleigh would be back soon. Hopefully she’d bring us information, but even if she didn’t, we weren’t going to have a lot of time without an audience. I didn’t want to let people know that Brianna had panicked for a minute. I wasn’t sure what that was about, but at the end of the day, it was her story to tell or keep to herself.

“Why are you being so kind to me?”

Before I could answer, she practically leapt away from me. She’d heard Arleigh’s footsteps when I’d been too distracted to. Arleigh came around the corner just then, prancing toward us.

“Find anything?” Brianna asked coolly.

“Where’s the queen?” Arleigh asked in response.

“She’s talking to Ruth,” I explained. “Hopefully they’ll come up with some more information or figure out what caused everyone to get so blackout drunk.”

“What do you mean?” Arleigh asked. “We were partying. That happens.”

“We think there might have been more to the story,” Brianna explained. “I wonder if the king’s cousin could have tried to poison him but slipped the drugs to everyone instead of just the king.”

“It’s possible,” Arleigh shrugged. “Cadell has a reputation for being kind of aloof.”

“Aloof?” I asked. That wasn’t a word I often heard used to describe members of the royal family.
